Engine gas leakage gauges are primarily used to measure the continuous flow of gases that leak out of pistons, piston rings, supercharger bearing slits, and other passages in the gap. These gases enter the crankcase and flow out through the crankcase breather. Experiments have shown that when an engine leaks more than the average amount of gas, the following problems are usually likely to occur: poor cylinder surface finish; substandard quality of pistons, piston rings, and piston ring grooves; cylinder distortion; and incorrect liner assembly.

 

In engine testing, changes in air leakage can give you information about how well the engine is running.
